Seven litres of blood lost during the operation, which the surgeon declared a success even though, in his words, "Things got a bit rocky." Transfusions, a couple of days in Intensive Care, and then down onto the ward, one kidney and its 13cm tumour lighter. A huge cut-line and staples all across my front.

Barely able to cross the room. Barely able to climb the stairs. Having to rest while the hell in my lower back subsides. Legs first aflame and then jelly. The tumour, undeniably, making its presence felt.
